Hugo D. Critchley

The wiki has been citing Critchley secondhand since almost its first ingest — through Seth (the Seth–Critchley interoceptive-inference papers), through the awareness distinction, through Craig’s insular anatomy that Critchley’s imaging helped tie to experience. The Khalsa et al. (2018) roadmap, on which he is a co-author, is the first paper in raw/ to carry his name, so the page is created to give the field’s most-cited interoception imager a home.

Neural systems supporting interoceptive awareness

Critchley’s foundational result (Critchley, Wiens, Rotshtein, Öhman & Dolan 2004) is one of the citations the whole modern field rests on: heartbeat-detection accuracy tracks activity and grey-matter volume in the right anterior insula, and that activity relates to subjective emotional experience. It is the empirical bridge from Craig’s anatomy to measured interoceptive ability to felt emotion — the thing later theories (Seth’s interoceptive-inference, Barrett’s construction) assume as their starting datum. His Visceral influences on brain and behavior review (Critchley & Harrison 2013) is the synthesis that name is usually a shorthand for.

The distinctions and the timing

Two strands recur across the wiki. With Sarah Garfinkel, Critchley drew the accuracy / sensibility / awareness three-way dissociation (Garfinkel et al. 2015) that the wiki’s interoceptive-taxonomy and interoceptive-sensitivity pages are organized around — and that Farb et al. push back on terminologically. Separately, the Sussex group’s cardiac-cycle work (does a stimulus land on systole or diastole?) showed baroreceptor timing modulates fear and perception — up to Azevedo et al.’s finding that cardiac afferent signals modulate the expression of racial stereotypes — concrete evidence that the visceral state is not a backdrop to cognition but an input to it.

Placement

A foundational interoception researcher whose work the wiki had absorbed entirely through others until now. He anchors the Sussex/consciousness-science axis — allied with anil-seth on the predictive side (feedforward-vs-predictive-interoception), building on ad-craig’s anatomy, and here a co-signatory to the field consensus alongside sahib-khalsa and olga-pollatos. His roadmap disclosures are grant-based (ERC, MRC, Sackler) with no pharmaceutical entanglements.
