Georg Northoff

Neuroscientist and neurophilosopher whose organizing question is the self — its neural basis, its spatiotemporal structure, and its breakdown in psychiatric illness. Enters the wiki first-hand with Wiebking et al. (2010), the senior-authored study of the depressed “material me.”

Position

Northoff’s signature move is to split the self into a mental aspect (the self-referential, narrative “me,” seated in the cortical midline structures — especially dorsomedial PFC) and a physical/bodily aspect (the “material me,” seated in the insula), and to argue that psychiatric disorders can strike either. For depression, the affective-cognitive symptoms (rumination, self-blame, negative bias) map onto midline abnormality; the somato-vegetative symptoms (appetite, fatigue, bodily preoccupation) map onto insular abnormality — which is the hypothesis Wiebking et al. test. He borrows the “material me” term from William James via Craig, but where Craig treats it as a healthy anatomical achievement, Northoff treats it as a clinical variable that can be disordered.

His second organizing idea is rest–stimulus interaction: resting-state activity is a structured baseline that constrains subsequent stimulus-induced responses, so an abnormal rest state can masquerade as an abnormal stimulus response. In the 2010 study this is not just theory — a group difference that first appeared during exteroceptive stimulation dissolved under baseline correction and reappeared as a rest-period difference, a methodological demonstration of the idea.

• The bridge between Craig and the clinic. Northoff takes Craig’s “material me” out of comparative neuroanatomy and asks what its dysfunction looks like — which is what makes his work relevant to interoceptive-psychopathology and to embodied-selfhood read in a clinical register.
• Rest as the unit of analysis. His finding that depression’s insular abnormality lives in the rest period rather than the stimulus response is a caution the wiki carries forward: task-based interoception studies in depression may be reading baseline abnormalities as response abnormalities wherever the design cannot separate them.
• The “material me” is a frame, not a measurement. Across the 2010 work the leap from a body-perception questionnaire to a philosophical construct of selfhood is interpretive — no self-relatedness is manipulated. Hold the neuroanatomy and the neurophilosophy as separate claims of separate strength.
