Relaxation response

A construct from the behavioural-medicine tradition rather than the interoception literature, introduced here with Lazar et al. (2000) because that paper is its first neuroimaging map and the wiki’s earliest meditation-fMRI source.

What it is

Coined by Herbert Benson (Harvard / Mind-Body Medical Institute) in the 1970s, the relaxation response names a set of coordinated physiological changes — reduced oxygen consumption, lowered heart rate, slowed respiration, reduced sympathetic tone, altered EEG — that a range of simple meditative techniques reliably elicit. Benson’s claim was that these techniques (transcendental meditation, breath-focused practice with a repeated word or phrase, and others) all trigger one integrated hypometabolic state, which he framed as the physiological counter-pole to the fight-or-flight response, and as an effective complementary treatment for conditions with a stress component.

Why it sits at the edge of this wiki

The relaxation response is a whole-body autonomic construct, defined by peripheral physiology and reproducible across meditation styles. That makes it both useful and limited for a wiki built on interoception:

  • It supplies a naming convention for the target of the wiki’s contemplative interventions before those interventions were parsed into attentional and interoceptive components — the state mindfulness and paced breathing were later argued to work through.
  • But it is deliberately agnostic about mechanism and about the felt body: it does not ask whether the practitioner perceives the slowed heart or breath, only that the physiology shifts. So it belongs beside homeostasis/allostasis and the efferent autonomic hierarchy, not among the perceptual constructs — and its all-styles-are-one framing is exactly the lumping that Lutz’s insistence on distinguishing practice families (see compassion-meditation) pushes against.

The one direct piece of evidence in the wiki is Lazar et al.’s early attempt to give it a brain map — which found attention (frontal/parietal) and autonomic-control (pregenual ACC, midbrain, hypothalamus) engagement, against a large global signal decrease that tracked the very cardiorespiratory changes the relaxation response is defined by. Held as background scaffolding, not as a validated mechanism.
