Neuroception

Porges’s signature psychological construct, and the point where Polyvagal Theory reaches into this wiki’s territory. Read first-hand in Porges (2023) after being carried secondhand through the Somatic Experiencing material.

The claim

Neuroception is proposed as a neural process, distinct from perception, that detects and distinguishes cues of safety, danger and life threat and reflexively shifts autonomic state — before, and independently of, conscious awareness or cognitive appraisal. Because it is reflexive, Porges argues, it is fast (survival cannot wait on deliberation) and “cannot be modified through cognitive channels” — the rationale for body-first over talk-first trauma work. The process is assigned, loosely, to temporal cortex (reading intentionality of faces, voices, gestures) with the periaqueductal-gray downstream.

Two limbs, and the interoceptive one

Porges frames neuroception as both top-down and bottom-up:

  • Top-down: cortical detection of threat/safety cues triggers an autonomic shift.
  • Bottom-up: the resulting autonomic reactions “send sensory information regarding bodily feelings to the brain where they are interpreted and consciously felt.”

And then the sentence that earns this page: “The bottom-up limb of the neuroception is functionally equivalent to interoception.” We are usually unaware of the triggering cue, Porges says, but generally aware of the body’s reaction — the visceral feeling. So neuroception’s felt output is an interoceptive state, and PVT’s safe/dangerous/life-threatening states are, on Porges’s own account, interoceptive states with an autonomic signature.

How the wiki holds it

This is a genuine conceptual bridge and also a reason for care. Neuroception overlaps heavily with constructs the wiki already carries under other names:

  • interoceptive-inference / predictive-coding — a non-conscious, precision-weighted evaluation of internal and external cues that sets a bodily state is close to what Seth, Barrett and Stephan describe, with more machinery and more falsifiable commitments. Neuroception names the what (reflexive safety detection) without the how (a generative model, prediction error, precision).
  • amygdala-based threat detection — the reflexive, pre-conscious threat appraisal LeDoux localises to defensive survival circuits covers much of neuroception’s top-down limb without the polyvagal commitments.

Because neuroception is inseparable from the theory it belongs to, it inherits that theory’s evidential standing: see is-polyvagal-theory-valid. The interoception claim is the durable part — that reflexive autonomic shifts are felt as bodily states is uncontroversial; the contested part is the specific three-circuit, dorsal-vs-ventral machinery PVT says produces them.
